What is Torah Yoga?

Torah is the wisdom and the way that has guided the Jewish people for thousands of years.

Yoga is the ancient practice of using breath and movement to enlighten body, mind, heart, and soul.

Torah Yoga ® offers an experience of Jewish Wisdom through Iyengar yoga instruction together with the study of traditional and mystical Jewish texts.

With the Torah Yoga ® approach you can learn and grow holistically. By studying with your whole self, you acquire wisdom that can inspire and guide your whole life.

How Do I Learn Torah Yoga?

You can learn the Torah Yoga ® way from Private and Group Classes, Lectures, and Shabbat Retreats.   Click When/Where...? for the time and place of currently scheduled events and for information on how to schedule new events.   You can also learn from the Torah Yoga Association and from the Torah Yoga Book and Torah Yoga Audio Cassette.

What's the Torah Yoga Association?

The Torah Yoga Association offers online, detailed, individual posture instruction (Iyengar style), 7-minute Tastes of Torah Yoga ®, and half-hour Torah Yoga ® Mini-Classes.   It offers other Torah & Yoga teachings from different teachers.   Members are able to respond to these teachings.   The site can help students and teachers find each other using our safe, privacy-respecting Students and Teachers Directories.   Membership and all content are currently free.

newly posted   Want to share with others, or find help, friends, or a soulmate?   Each member can write a User Note—this is a free-format personal webpage viewable only by other members of the TYA.   Create and read User Notes in the TYA Students/Teachers Directory.

newly posted   The TYA believes in security and so we host encrypted (https) sessions.   Unfortunately, obtaining an SSL website certificate from an automatically recognized Certificate Authority costs money each year.   We have decided to try a free SSL website certificate from StartCom.   You may be able to simply accept this certificate.   Most likely, you may have to install the StartCom Certificate Authority Root Certificate and StartCom Class 1 Primary Intermediate Server Certificate.   In every case, be sure to view the certificate first, and also be sure to check boxes to allow the certificate and uncheck boxes to disable warning messages, as needed.

Don't be intimidated by your browser's scary warning messages!   The StartCom Certificate Authority is legitimate and can help us to keep down costs.

Install the StartCom Certification Authority Root Certificate.

Install the StartCom Class 1 Primary Intermediate Server Certificate.

To join the Torah Yoga Association, click the Membership Application Form.   In addition to online, detailed, individual posture instruction (Iyengar), the TYA offers 7-minute Tastes of Torah Yoga ® and half-hour Torah Yoga ® Mini-Classes.   Online instruction can never take the place of a live instructor or chevruta, nevertheless, these online guides can be very helpful in building a home/office practice.   For more information, click An Invitation to Join the Torah Yoga Association.

An Invitation to Join the Torah Yoga Association

From Diane Bloomfield, Jerusalem

Dear Reader,

Shalom!   I am pleased to invite you to join the Torah Yoga Association.   Why should you join the Torah Yoga Association?   To begin with, it offers online, detailed, individual posture instruction (Iyengar style), 7-minute Tastes of Torah Yoga ®, and half-hour Torah Yoga ® Mini-Classes.   It offers other Torah & yoga teachings from different teachers.   Members can respond to these teachings online.   Students and teachers can find each other using our safe, privacy-respecting Students and Teachers Directories.

newly posted   Want to share with others, or find help, friends, or a soulmate?   Each member can write a User Note—this is a free-format personal webpage viewable only by other members of the TYA.   Create and read User Notes in the TYA Students/Teachers Directory.

It was more than 20 years ago that I first had a vision of the spiritual power, beauty, and truth of bringing the practice of yoga and the study of Torah together.   Since that time, I have been teaching Torah Yoga ® across the Americas, Europe, and Israel.   Torah Yoga ® is a dynamic, new way to learn Torah every day.

Others have created their own inspired forms of Torah & yoga, for example: R. Myriam Klotz's Torat Haguf, Larissa Blechman's Shalom Yoga, R. Itzchak Marmorstein's Ofanim, Ida Unger's work with the Hebrew letters, and Nina Moliver's Jewish Yoga.   Bringing the wisdom of the body into Jewish practice is blossoming, and many are eager to learn and to teach.

In his interpretation on the Shma, the medieval commentator, Rashi, teaches that when we listen to the old, we hear what is new.   It is my prayer that Torah Yoga will teach you to experience what is new in the ancient words of Torah as they reverberate in your own body, mind, heart, and soul—and that, with this dynamic synthesis, you may experience Torah that is abundant, life-enhancing, healing, inspiring, and joyful.

To join the TYA, click the Torah Yoga Association Membership Form and fill in all the blanks (website is optional).   Then click the link in an activation email.   Membership and all content are currently free.
